Next meeting – 3rd Septmber – University of Warwick – 11AM – 1PM

At our next meeting we will be squeezing two speakers into the session.

Each speaker will keep their presentations just under an hour allowing us to fit them both into the normal time slot, have a short break and still have time to get to the pub afterwards!

Time: 11.00AM – 13.00PM

Location: Room H4.01, Humanities Building,Library Road, University of Warwick, Coventry, CV4 7AL – Map

First Speaker: Jodie O’Rourke @jodieorourke

A Mobile Application on Android & iOS
Devices in a Flash (45 minutes to be
precise).

In this presentation Jodie presents the need-to-know facts about developing,
compiling and deploying Flash and Flex mobile applications for Android OS and iOS mobile devices. He’ll show you how to use the tools, where to get the certificates, and how to test the applications on the devices.

Jodie is an Adobe Community Professional and Certified Expert on the Flash Platform. He currently works as a Development Lead at blinkbox.com, the online movie and TV site. He tweets (@jodieorourke) and blogs (http://jodieorourke.com) regularly, and his first book – Flash Mobile Application Development for Dummies – is out in October.

Second speaker: Stefan Richter @stefanrichter

We’ve all heard of Amazon Web Services (not least because of the major outage they suffered in April), but what exactly is AWS and how can you leverage this platform in your next project?

I will give you an overview of Amazon Web Services – no prior knowledge required – with a specific look at EC2, storage and database options as well as ways to run your own blog or static website on AWS.

You will learn about the benefits that AWS can bring to both your development and production environment and find out how AWS makes it possible to build a scalable and reliable online service from your bedroom.

As always, it’s free, but we like to know who’s coming… Attendees who register their attendance as a comment below will be entered into a raffle for a software give-away at the end of the year! Please add a comment if you’re going to be there, and feel free to invite friends/guests along.

A few changes at Flash Midlands…

Website back up and running.

Last month we had to take the Flash Midlands site down due to a hacking attack. The site is now back up and running and we would like to assure everyone that no passwords were compromised.

It has been necesarry to delete a number of rogue accounts and it was also necesarry to delete a small number of genuine ones. If yours was deleted please accept our apologies, the normal features of the site will be back up and running as soon as possible.

Change in management

We would also like to officially welcome Peter Doyle as the new Flash Midlands User Group Co manager.

Peter will be taking over the role from Trevor Ward. Although Trevor will still be a regular face at Flash Midlands meetings he is also responsible for the Sheffield Adobe User Group and will be concentrating on that.

New base for future meetings

A decision has also been made to make Warwick Univeristy the home of all future Flash Midlands meetings.

We have been splitting the meetings between the Univeristy’s of Nottingham Trent and Warwick for some time now in an effort to make the meetings availabale to more people however over the past few months it has been agreed that it would be better for the group to have one base and keep things consistent.

Our next meeting will be taking place at Warwick Uni on September 3rd – more details to follow shortly

Next meeting: Saturday June 4th – Nottingham – Open Spoon Foundation

Saturday 4th June, 11AM – 1PM - Nottingham Trent University

Speaker: Tom Chiverton (@thefalken)

What the Open Spoon Foundation means for Flex
Adobe created a successful framework for building applications and provided that framework to the community under an open-source license. But the necessarily limited engineering time Adobe provided caped the number and type of interactions below the needed level. As such, there was a rising level of developer frustration. A fork of Flex was discussed openly as the only way to move forward. This would have been bad.

Spoon is the solution – not a fork, but the creation of a true open source community around the Flex framework, incorperating both Adobe and the wider community.

Come along to find out more about what how and why Spoon got started, and how this Mozilla-style Foundation intends to benefit all Flex users.

For this meeting we are in the normal Computing and Informatics building in room 101.

Afterwards, we’ll head over to the Toby Carvery pub on the A52 for a beer and some lunch – all welcome, and there’s plenty of room if you need a lift!

Register for the raffle!

As always it’s free but we like to know who’s coming…attendees who register their attendance as a comment will be entered into a raffle for a software giveaway later in the year.

Next User Group meeting – Warwick Uni – Saturday 7th May – Candi TV

Join us again at the University of Warwick,  Social Sciences Building, Saturday 7th May,  11.00AM.

CandiTV® is a mobile call and interactive system, the system offers people a way to interact with public facing screens in shop windows, city centres, stadiums and many more. Users simply use their mobile phone to call a phone number displayed on the screen; by simply using the keys on their device, they can navigate and interact with the content on the screen.

This presentation is to demonstrate what CandiTV® is and what it can do for clients and users. With the release of the SDK at Flash Camp Birmingham, we are going to show how developers can now be involved in developing applications using the CandiTV® platform, but also see what the future holds for CandiTV®, with the Rise of the Smart Phones.
